Most likely dianthuses are native to the Mediterranean, although it is hard to say as they have been cultivated throughout the world for the last 2000 years. Clove Pink is a common name as well as Carnation. The flowers are a beautiful mixture of pinks and white with pink trim exhibiting a clove scent which lends it to pot pourri. Originally used to flavour drinks such as wine and ale, can also be used in salads, cordials and syrups as the flowers are edible. A perennial plant which is great as a ground cover, ideal in borders. Maturity 75 days from transplant, drought tolerant.
Sow into tray in early spring or summer. Prick out to 4cm diagonal spacing when true leaves appear. Transplant into permanent garden bed at 30cm diagonal spacing or as you see fit for your garden design.
