An amazing shallot that multiplies both at ground level and also flowers producing beautiful purplish bulbils which perform identically to the bottom bulbs when used as seed. Prior to the Green Revolution these types of shallots were found in most home gardens as they are very easy to grow. The bottom onion bulb can be eaten which has a very sweet flavour. In our case we plant the bulbs for our main seed crop, although we have found in a home garden setting all the bulbs can be eaten, and instead save the top bulbils for seed!
A multiplying shallot growth habit. Sow May-August. Plant bulbils first in trays and then plant out like bulbs at 15-20cm diagonal spacing in aerated, fertile, well drained soil that gets plenty of sunlight. Moisten soil, then apply thick mulch. Water if needed in summer. Harvest Dec-Jan. when leaves start to die back. Store with roots and tops on to cure.
