NZH We were given this bean by a fellow seed saver Rob Hammington. When we opened the parcel we were amazed to see how big these seeds are! Definitely the largest bean seed I have seen! And such an outstanding dry bean for cooking Italian bean salads, broth based soups and stews, as well as the classic baked beans. Also a lovely fresh eating green bean if picked when young or as a fresh shell out bean. Heritage runner beans are perennial if tended well and will produce year after year. This bean did arrive to us with about 5% crossing of Scarlet runner. We wanted to make it available as it is such a stunning bean, but we will continue to select for true White Butterfly plants. This is easy to do in your garden too, as these flowers are white while the crossed flowers are orange. All runner beans are climbers and require staking/trellis support for best performance.
Sow in trays in glasshouse in September or direct in the garden when chance of frost has passed. From trays prick out when true leaves appear and transplant into fertile soil at 15-20cm spacing under a trellis for support. Reminder this is a perrennial plant, so choose your planting spot with this in mind.
