Scabiosa - Starflower Pincushions

OH An unusual textural cut flower prized for its seedheads. As the common name suggests, they form individual parchment like pleated cups with stars in the centre of each and together forming a perfect sphere. Stunning in both dried and fresh floral arrangements, it is native to southwestern Europe and Northern Africa where they can be found growing wild in paddocks and on the roadside. Also known by the names’ drumstick flower, Paper moons, Drumstick Scabious, Ping Pong or Ping Pong Starflower. As the Latin name suggests, Scabiosa refers to the Latin word scabies meaning “itch” as it was known in ancient times to treat scurvy and stellata come from stella the Latin word for “star.” Annual.  

Sow into trays in early spring through to late summer prick out to 4cm spacing when true leaves appear. Transplant into well prepared fertile permanent bed at 30cm spacing. Repeat for an autumn sowing in late summer through to early autumn.
