Lettuce - Iceberg

OH. It seems funny to me to be offering for sale, albeit an heirloom variety, a lettuce which was one of the first crops grown for shipping long distances, and a move away from local produce! Iceberg lettuce was bred in 1894 from the French crisphead variety, Batavia, by W. Atlee Burpee & Co. What made iceberg different and originally gave it its name was its icy white colour and a very crisp texture that held for a longer period. The name Iceberg took further hold when it became the first lettuce to be shipped on ice on trains from California to the East Coast. Although I cannot say I approve of shipping of produce such long distances, I do enjoy the crisp fresh taste of this Iceberg lettuce straight from my garden in salad or on sandwiches etc. It holds very well in heat and does not bolt easily, so a good lettuce to have on hand in the heat of summer. Just make sure you so it in spring to get established before the summer heats up.  

Sow in early Spring, repeat monthly for continuous supply. Sow into trays, prick out at 4cm diagonal spacing when true leaves emerge. Transplant into fertile soil at 20cm. As some seeds require heat to germinate, lettuces DO NOT germinate if soil temperature is too high. In summer we have found lettuces do not germinate in glasshouse conditions, instead we germinate them in our shadehouse.
