Tomato - Olga's Round Golden Chicken Egg

OH. Here is another one of the chart topping golden “pomodoro” tomatoes from the Heritage Food Crops Research Trust. This seed was gifted to us by this organisation’s director, Mark Christensen, and we finally have grown some for sale! We learned through Mark’s research a few years back about the golden tomatoes actually being the original colour all tomatoes were when they were found growing in South America during the Spanish conquest. Through breeding in Europe, the recessive golden trait which also carried high levels of easily available tetra-cis-lycopene disappeared with the advent of the red tomato. Olga’s is one of the highest Mark and his team have found for this trait. Why is this lycopene so important? It has been shown to help fight against cancer and heart disease. A Russian heirloom from Siberia, these seeds we originally collected by Bill McDorman of Idaho on a trip to Russia. He then gave seeds to the Seed Savers Exchange in the early 90’s. Indeterminate plant producing 6-7cm diameter sized golden thick-skinned fruit with a slightly tart flavour. Try this one for your health! 

Sow in August into trays in a glasshouse. Keep soil temp at 18-20°C for ideal germination. Prick out when true leaves appear to 4cm diagonal spacing. Pot on to small pots to further develop roots. Transplant after last frost to 40cm diagonal spacing into fertile ground in direct sun. Stake and de-lateral as needed.
