Carrot - Phil's

OH A number of years ago I taught a seed saving workshop in Ashhurst, and the outdoor part of the workshop was held at Slow Farm. Phil Stevens, the owner helped a lot to achieve a great workshop with a practical component, and then at the end of the day gifted us with several seed lines he had been growing for years, since his time living in Tucson, Arizona. This carrot was one of these lines and has been grown in NZ for many years, so it will be well adapted to our climate.  A Nantes type, short length with deep orange colour. We are pleased to offer it here, and as it turns out send some seed back to Phil, as he has lost this line recently. One of the true joys in seed saving, is not jus the saving of the seed, but also in the sharing back and reciprocity. Something we can learn from nature, time and time again.

Direct sow in early Spring and Late Summer in rows 20cm apart for an almost constant supply. Cover with shade cloth until seed germinates and gets established. Can be sown in trays and transplanted when true leaves emerge if there are large slug/snail populations. Fan out little plants in prepared trenches similar to planting leeks.
