Corn - Country Gentleman

OH An heirloom sweet corn that kids and adults alike will love! Developed in 1890 by Frank C. Woodruff of S. D. Woodruff & Sons, in Orange, Connecticut. He had been working on a new line for 12 years crossing Ne Plus Ultra with other lines and had success with Stowell's Evergreen. A success was born, producing 20cm long cobbs with large milky white kernels arranged in a zig zag pattern, which gave the corn an alternate name of Shoe Peg. The name, Country Gentleman, was chosen after a popular America agricultural magazine of the time.  Shortly after this corn was picked up by Peter Henderson and Company of New York, who helped it to be recognized as a great choice for canneries as it freezes well. It is still grown today commercially for this purpose, which shows it has stood the test of time for being an outstanding producer. It grows to 2m height and producing up to 3 cobbs per plant in fertile soil. Delicious flavour and texture, cobbs hold longer than other heritage varieties in the field. An all-around great sweetcorn!

Sow into trays in October in areas where there is frost, to 4cm diagonal spacing and keep in glasshouse. Transplant out to 25cm diagonal spacing in garden bed in November-December taking care to protect from frost. Or direct sow at 10-20cm spacing in October-November taking care to protect from frost. A heavy feeder, will require fertile soil.
