Kamokamo - Te Teko

NZH We were fortunate to be sent these seeds by Jenny Ruri in time for spring planting this year. Kamokamo also known as Kumikumi was introduced to Aotearoa by European settlers in the late 1800’s to early 1900’s. It is likely that several different varieties were introduced during that period as the shape of kamokamo varies from long to round fruit. This variety is from Te Teko and known by Māori people across NZ as the best according to Jenny when she gave us the seeds. It has an elongated fruit shape with ridges and exceptional flavour. Famous in Te Teko for whānau and commercial growers alike and often seen at road side hawker stalls. I have been told that these seeds are not available commercially and instead have been handed down whānau to whānau. This variety is popular to use for kamokamo pickle as well as sought after in summer for fresh eating. Jenny grew a hybrid variety one season and it didn't compare. This are the real deal kamokamo. Can be eaten when young much like courgette or roasted like pumpkin as they mature. Traditionally, the very mature fruit were also used much like hue as a vessel for storing the pulp of ripe tutu berries in.

Sow into trays in September/October. Prick out to 4cm diagonal spacing when true leaves appear. Transplant into fertile soil at 50cm diagonal spacing when chance of frost has passed.

10 seeds.
