Amaranthus - Pigmy Torch

OP. Amaranth originated in Central America, predominantly Mexico and was grown for grain.  Amaranthus Hypochondriacus also came from this area and was bred from the taller grain varieties more for ornamental use, although in modern times, makes a great home garden grain crop, not taking up too much space, growing to 1 metre height and more compact for spacing. Pigmy Torch is a striking plant with deep burgundy leaves and vibrant deep red flowers. Also known commonly as Prince-of-Wales Feather and Prince's Feather has dual purpose in the garden, and can be enjoyed in both fresh or dried floral arrangements from mid-summer until frosts as the foliage dries well. Or stake and net from the birds with ease and harvest your own amaranth grain as in Africa and El Salvador, like many other species in the family Amaranthaceae, it is valued as a food source. Preferring full sun this plant enjoys warm, moist, but well-drained soil. We received this seed from Sentinels Seeds.

Scatter sow seeds in trays 4-6 weeks before last frost or plant outdoors direct sown from late October through to early November. Prick out when first two leaves appear at 4 cm diagonal spacing, transplant into fertile garden bed at 40cm diagonal spacing.
